-E-mail: any combination of Gmail, Google Apps, or POP mail accounts / IMAP. Exchange too if you use a compatible email client. See below for a list of supported clients.
-Text messages: both native and Google Voice, including pop-up options and response
-Missed calls: Return calls directly from the application
-Calendar events (including Exchange and Facebook if supported by phone)
-Tasks: Astrid, Google Tasks Organizer (lite and pro), has to do, gTasks by Dato, Job Task Manager (lite or pro), or TouchDown

The use of any of 3 modes:
+ Lock Screen: Use as a substitute for the lock screen to preview all of your stuff without going through the hassle of having to unlock the phone.
